The services of the town hall have just published the demographic figures of the civil status recorded last year. Good news: births are on the rise again.
With the month of January comes the time for resolutions but also for taking stock. The services of the town hall have published their traditional demographic data from the civil registry. Figures which reflect the evolution of the Monegasque population, are added to the inhabitants of the municipalities bordering also the Principality’s healthcare structures.
Three positive indicators in 2021
Several positive indicators further brighten a second year marked by the health crisis. In the first rank attributed: the number of births. Last year, 976 babies were born on Monegasque soil, compared to 911 in 2020 and 939 in 2019. In detail, the new parents gave birth to 498 little boys and 478 little girls in the maternity wards of the CHPG (except one, born at home). Parity almost reached!
Concerning the place of residence of the families, 248 of them were domiciled in Monaco, while the 728 other births concerned parents domiciled outside the Principality for the most part in the municipalities of Menton (220), Beausoleil (103 ) and Roquebrune Cap Martin (110). Indeed, the maternity of Menton having closed its doors for many years, the maternity service of the CHPG welcomes the entire population pool of the eastern department of the Alpes-Maritimes.
More good news: there were more marriages and fewer divorces in 2021, compared to the previous year (read below).
87% of deaths in hospital
In terms of deaths, on the other hand, the trend is upwards compared to 2020. Among the 603 disappearances recorded this year in the Principality (compared to 535 last year): 314 were men and 289 were women. Most deaths occurred in hospital (87%) and 5% in clinics. Among the deceased, 297 were domiciled in Monaco and 306 in neighboring municipalities.
A happy year for couples
The couples lived happy days in 2021 in Monaco. While the number of weddings was down in 2020 – the fault of the economic situation and the report of major holidays due to health restrictions – 181 people said yes on Monegasque soil last year.
A slight rebound compared to the previous year when 174 people had united, according to the registers of the town hall. Not yet enough to reach the 202 pre-crisis unions in 2019, but it is tempting to see this as a positive indicator for the year 2022 which has just begun.
In detail, three marriages brought together two people of Monegasque nationality; 52 Monegasque men married a woman of foreign nationality; 25 Monegasque women have chosen a foreign husband.
On the divorce side, the recorded figures are down. In 2021, 58 divorces were pronounced compared to 63 in 2020 and 70 in 2029, all nationalities combined.
