Swedish police are chasing drones that have been seen flying over Forsmark’s nuclear power plant
Police in Sweden deployed patrols and helicopters to Forsmark’s nuclear power plant to hunt for a large drone that was seen flying over the site late on Friday, but did not manage to catch the unmanned vehicle, they said on Saturday. The incident occurred a day after the Swedish military began patrolling the capital on the Baltic Sea Gotland in the midst of increased tensions between NATO and Russia and the recent deployment of Russian landing craft in the Baltic Sea.
Forsmark, which is Sweden’s largest electricity producer, is located on the Baltic coast about 150 km north of the capital Stockholm. Police say the drone, which was first spotted by a security guard, moved around the facility before disappearing towards the island of Graso.
“The police continue to try to locate the drone, even with their own (drones), but without success,” the police force said in an incident report on its website, adding that there were no signs that the drone had dropped anything in the area or landed. It also cited unconfirmed reports of possible sightings of drones at Ringhals nuclear power plant on the country’s west coast.
