Freilassing / Salzburg: Container blocked lane police are not aware of any complaints
For a year now, a 24-hour container has been blocking a lane for a 30-minute inspection. The police are unaware of any complaints. Oberndorf is setting a successful example.
Freilassing / Salzburg – A month ago the blue control container on the Saalbrücke celebrated its first birthday. Established in December 2020 for the 24-hour controls ordered at the time, it has been felt that there have only been 30 minutes of checks a day here for months, on the edge of the container or across from it. Inside there are chairs and a desk. Nevertheless, the container continues to block the left lane, dismantling or at least putting it aside is still not considered, entry rules would currently still apply, which are also random, according to the police. Other municipalities such as Oberndorf or Großgmain got rid of their containers, but how?
The Omikron wave is shaking a lot, the numbers are skyrocketing, winter sports locations in the Salzburger Land have extrapolated up to 10,000 new infections per week to 100,000 inhabitants and yet there is no lockdown, no exit controls, nothing far and wide. Only the lockdown for unvaccinated people is still in place and was recently tightened, but it now actually has to be controlled in trade.
The corona rules for entering Austria also still apply. Obviously nobody has just time to control Salzburg’s borders with Bavaria. A patrol car and two officers at border crossings can only be seen occasionally, who then also check the entry rules as part of “normal traffic controls”.
However, the police still see no reason to dismantle the container on the Saalbrücke or to put it at least ten meters further on the traffic island, on which a separate place for a container was paved years ago. There are no complaints about the location and thus the bottleneck, picking up the container and possibly putting it back up later when & would cause costs and thus waste tax money.
Oberndorf shows how it’s done
Other places have managed to get rid of their container at the border, for example Oberndorf. Mayor Georg Djundja fought for the dismantling very early on, “on the one hand, traffic safety was impaired by the container directly at the country bridge, one side of the sidewalk had to be blocked and the view in the intersection area was obstructed”. In addition, the blue container would have “disturbed the Oberndorf-Laufen line of sight” and the monster suggested the separation of the states, which is known to have been very badly received in the merging cities of Laufen and Oberndorf.
Djundja was successful, the container was picked up again before summer 2021, the box was also removed from the middle of the roadway between Großgmain and Bayrisch Gmain, the container was even pushed aside at the Walserberg motorway border crossing, here was the bottleneck in the direction of Salzburg, but Also the bottleneck in the direction of Bavaria – because of the access to the container – obviously too obstructive to traffic, but maybe it also impaired a line of sight. All of this is apparently not the case at the Saalbrücke, here obviously neither of the two mayors is bothered by a narrowed entry point.
