Prague 6 wants a new face, it will announce a competition with Czechdesign
The new logo and a unified visual style for the city district will emerge from the competition open to all, with the winner due to be the first during June this year.
Prague 6 was the first city district to publish its own logo in 2005. After seventeen years, however, it no longer corresponds to the contemporary visual style of cities; Moreover, the visual identity of the city district is formed only by the logo itself, without other visual elements, which together formed a single brand together with the organizations that belong to the town hall. Therefore, the decision was made to announce a competition for a new unified visual style.
“Prague 6 is a brave and confident part of the city, as well as the people who live in it. And such should be its brand, external presentation and communication of the town hall. I am glad that we and the councilors have unanimously agreed on a competition for a new visual identity, and we have also decided on an open competition where almost anyone can enter. I myself am very curious what proposals will appear, and I look forward to a discussion about how our city district actually is and what defines it, “said the mayor of the Prague 6 district, Ondřej Kolář.
Prague Design invited the organization Czechdesign to organize a competition for a new visual identity, which will ensure professional management of the entire process and will also sponsor the competition from a professional point of view. During January, the preparation of a specific competition assignment will begin, followed by the composition of a jury, in which renowned experts will sit alongside the elected representatives of the city district – including the opposition. The competition itself will be announced in mid-April, the first round, which will be open to all those interested in a number of graphic designers and studios. Five competitors will then advance to the second round. The winner will be the first in June this year.
“We organized a similar type of competition for the Prague 3 district. It gave rise to a visual identity that is strong, bold and playful. In the two years of its existence, the town hall has approached its citizens, lived in Prague 3 and almost become popular. I believe that a great result will be achieved in Prague 6 as well, “Radim Tuček, Strategic Director of Czechdesign, explains the parameters of the competition and the associated expectations.
Today’s Prague 6 is a place for everyday life and the seat of major universities, embassies or an international airport. Modern art in public space and technology have become an integral part of it. The design competition should thus pave the way for building a visual identity that will authentically reflect the appearance of Prague’s largest city district – it will be modern, timeless, sophisticated and open to the world. The new unified graphic design will then gradually be reflected in the overall visual communication of Prague 6.
The current logo, which presents the city district of Prague 6, comes from 2005 by Michal Kopecký. The logo is based on the intersection of two basic geometric shapes – a square and a circle. The combination of both shapes refers to the constructivist and functionalist architecture of the 1930s, which found its maximum application especially in the territory of Prague 6.
