LIVE: The Christmas tree on the Old Town Square goes to the ground
The spruce trunk goes to the sawmill and the boards are then made to the joinery apprentices of the Jarov Secondary Vocational School, which makes furniture for the city organization. The branches diversify the diet of animals in the Troja Zoo. “On Friday, the dismantling of Christmas decorations began, today the branches are cut and then the trunk is removed,” said Prague councilor Jan Chabr (TOP 09). He added that the tribe would then head to the sawmill in the village of Sibřina east of the metropolis. According to the councilor, the furniture that the apprentices then make from the wood will suit the needs of the children’s home or the facility for the elderly. The city treated the tree in the same way last year.
The 21.5-meter-tall THMP spruce was laid on the ground with the help of a smaller crane, followed by trimming the branches and dividing the trunk into parts. According to the company, two crews of electricians took care of the roughly two-day dismantling of about 280 ornaments and a six-kilometer light chain. You can watch all the events on the Old Town Square in a live broadcast prepared by Mall.tv.
The most famous tree in the Czech Republic
Every year, Norway spruce becomes the most famous tree in the Czech Republic. This year he was a conifer, which stood on a plot of land in Dolní Černá Studnice near Jablonec nad Nisou until 21 November, ie more than 100 kilometers from Prague.
On the night of November 23, the tractor took him to the center of Prague. There, the staff of the Technology of the Capital erected him, it was done around 3:30. In the following days, the tree was dressed in a Christmas robe.
“This year, we have chosen the dominant colors of the capital city of Prague for decoration, that is yellow and red. So we replaced yellow with gold, so gold and red will dominate the 240 spheres of light. But to create a Christmas atmosphere, more than 40 three-dimensional snowflakes will also appear on the tree and, as every year, the tree will be lined with over six kilometers of light chains, ”said Tomáš Jílek, Chairman of the Board of Technology of the Capital City of Prague.

The ceremonial lighting did not take place this year due to the epidemiological situation, the tree lit up on Friday, November 26, five minutes after five in the afternoon. At the last minute – two days before the start of the Christmas markets on the Old Town Square – the government decided that the markets themselves were not allowed.
They chose from 35 trees
The owner decided to cut the spruce for security reasons. “We chose from 35 trees, this one won due to its shape and rich branching, but I was reluctant for a long time before we gave our thumbs up to undergo such a demanding operation in terms of logistics. But the people of Prague definitely deserve the most beautiful tree. From the beginning, he was the main favorite, the other trees were near Česká Lípa and Šumava, but this one simply won despite his demanding position, “Jílek told reporters.
The tree felling tree felled on Sunday, November 21, around ten o’clock in the morning Jiří Vorlíček, it was already his tenth Christmas tree for Prague. The spruce was secured by a crane all the time, because it was first necessary to remove the lower part of the branches and prepare them according to the template so that it could be settled on the Old Town Square without further modification. The lumberjack also marked the side that will be visible from the astronomical clock on the spruce before placing the tree on the tractor. “When they build it from Monday, they will have it simplified, because under artificial lighting it always hits well,” added Vorlíček.
Around 15:30, the excessive cargo set off in the direction of Prague, the energy companies had to help because it was necessary to lift the power line when leaving. The tractor with a six-tonne load set off in the direction of Jablonec nad Nisou and further to the reconstructed Rádelský mlýn crossroads, which will open for normal operation in three weeks. After minor complications, the tree arrived in Hostivař, where it spent the night.
