two days on pediatric cancers – Pages Monaco
The 15th Monegasque Cancer Biennial devotes two days to solid pediatric (brain tumors and bone tumors) and hematological (blood tumors) cancers.
The last few years have been marked by major changes in the understanding of these cancers, in particular by the development of tumor sequencing. It allows a better knowledge of these and their functioning, thus opening up new avenues for innovative, more numerous and more effective treatments.
On the occasion of the Monegasque Cancer Biennial, several teams of researchers from Grenoble, Marseille, Monaco, Nice, Paris or Rennes, will share the nature of their work, through more than twenty sessions spread over two days. The presentations will deal, among other things, with:
• identification of tumors, in particular of the brain,
• cellular immunotherapy,
• repositioning of drugs,
• the theragnostic approach in which modern imaging allows precise identification of tumors and
therapeutic targets,
• brain tumor stem cells. They play an important role in resistance to care by
under. The team responsible for this program seeks to make these cells vulnerable to treatment.
Pediatric cancers represent only about 2% of all cancers. They affect children and young adults under the age of 15 and differ from adult cancers by their causes and nature. However, there is not yet a treatment taking into account their specificities. The most frequent pediatric cancers are hematological and cerebral while in adults cancerous pathologies mainly affect the lungs, breast or prostate.
Various and rare pathologies
“Pediatric cancers are very diverse and rare pathologies …” explains Doctor Vincent Picco, team leader at the Scientific Center of Monaco, an establishment which conducts several research projects on these cancers “… No specially developed treatment against one of these diseases is currently not used clinically. Thus, these pathologies strictly meet the definition of so-called orphan diseases. The only driving force allowing this situation to be improved on the scientific and medical community which, in partnership in particular with associations of families of patients, takes responsibility for dealing with these problems on a large scale. Meetings such as those which will take place within the framework of the 15th Monegasque Biennial of Cancerology are fundamental for this great collective effort to gain in efficiency and visibility. “
The 15th Monegasque Cancer Biennial is organized by Publi Création with the support of AFISM and under the aegis of the Scientific Center of Monaco and the Princess Grace Hospital of Monaco.
