Rtl today – Luxembourg-City: Distributors of free hygienic products and condoms in public toilets
The City of Luxembourg was inspired by the municipality of Walferdange, which launched the same project a year ago.
As a first step, vending machines will be set up at the entrance to the public toilets of the Place de la Constitution, the Place du Théâtre, the Cercle Cité, the Glacis car park and the municipal park near the playground. of the pirate ship. Two other distributors will be installed in the public toilets of Place Guillaume II and Le Bock, as soon as they reopen.
Tampons and towels, which are essential feminine hygiene products, will be made available free of charge to help women and young girls during their menstruation, because access to these hygiene products would be a basic need, according to Maurice Bauer, alderman of the City of Luxembourg, responsible for equal opportunities between men and women.
The project also aims to “detabouise” menstruation, because if the subject is openly more and more often, its taboo character has not yet completely disappeared. This would be an important step to continue to promote and advance equality between women and men, but also for the daily lives of those concerned, adds Maurice Bauer. Discussions should be undertaken at the national level to see how it would be possible to make these products completely free for all girls and women.
Condoms will also be available free of charge from dispensers. They are “an important means of contraception and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases», Underlines the City of Luxembourg on its site.
After a six-month test phase, the pilot project will be evaluated by the municipal authorities, who will decide on its extension to other places such as sports centers or cultural places. Another project in an elementary school and a foyer scolaire is under development.
