the garbage collectors’ strike continues and could harden
The persistent garbage cans continue to deal in Toulouse. The striking garbage collectors and Toulouse Métropole did not find an agreement on Wednesday, January 5, during a negotiation meeting. The strike continues.
A meeting between the Metropolis of Toulouse and the garbage collectors should allow a way out of the crisis. But all did not go as planned this Wednesday, January 5. The agents of the metropolis demanded recognition of the arduousness of their work by asking for 34 days of leave in compensation. After 3 hours of discussions, they were obtained 9 from the community.
“The main points of demand were issues on working time and pay. No agreement was reached. Our positions are far too far apart today“, reports Nicolas Refutin, FO secretary and member of the intersyndicale
Since December 15, the city’s garbage collectors have been on strike to protest against the end of the party. This system allows officers to return home after garbage collection is complete. The Metropolis has decided to put an end to it so as not to encourage the agents to go faster and put themselves in danger. With this regime, they worked an average of 25 hours. The end of this system therefore forces garbage collectors to work 1,607 hours per year, or 35 hours per week.
In return for the end of this regime, collection agents ask for daily recognition of the difficulty of their profession.
“We proposed that the community grant us, through the recognition of hardship, half of the days of recovery that we lost with the abandonment of the finished job. Because it is estimated that our fellow garbage collectors will work 67 additional days per year and we asked that the Metropolis cover half of this loss, i.e. 34 days.», Explains Nicolas Refutin.
For the moment, the proposals of Toulouse Métropole are, according to them, not sufficient.
The strikers have planned to go this Thursday, January 6 in the six depots of the city. They will then decide how the rest of the movement will turn out.
After three weeks of strike, garbage cans continue to pile up in the streets of the Toulouse metropolis.
