Vinci Autoroutes has undertaken work to modernize the signage before the Monaco exit. Next step: the construction of a nailed wall to support the embankment at the edge of the track.
You will not have missed this if you drive on the A8 motorway between Nice and Monaco at night: work has been carried out since mid-November at the exit of the Borne Romaine tunnel.
It is there that, a few meters from the Monaco exit interchange (n ° 56), Vinci Autoroutes has started work to modernize the directional and dynamic signage towards the Principality and Italy.
Deconstruction of the rock face
But of the operation: installer of two large gantries that will span the 3 lanes of the A8 motorway. The first will be just after exiting the tunnel and the second, just before the Monaco exit.
These gantry cranes will display fixed information to indicate directions, as well as a screen to broadcast variable messages (speed limit, roadworks, traffic jams, etc.)
After the first stage with the pouring of the first foundations in the central reservation in November, the Vinci Autoroutes teams set about digging the rock wall which adjoins the right lane. The objective is to scrape in the hill to nest there the two other foundations which will support the second leg of the porticoes.
“40 m3 of materials (rock, wood, etc.) will be removed on site and sorted to be sent to recycling channels or to landfill”, explains Sophie Lethuin-Farge, communication manager.
At this stage, “the deconstruction of the rock face is well advanced. “
The month of January 2022 will see the start of a new phase of the site: the construction of a nailed wall to support and reinforce the nibbled slope. Before the casting of said foundations in February.
The highway cut one night in spring
During this time, the speed is limited at night to 70 km / h at the construction site, which occupies the two traffic lanes furthest to the right. A return to normal is then planned until next spring, before the installation of the two signal gantries.
The maneuver will require a complete cut-off of the highway in this sector overnight. The exact date of the intervention has not yet been defined.
No protected species
According to the plan to respect the environment, carried out in consultation with an environmental study office, this operation “does not present any particular constraint”, says Sophie Lethuin-Farge.
“The Natura 2000 zone is not in the right-of-way of the site and no protected animal nests there”.
