Ukraine introduces a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine for people aged 60+
Ukraine has allowed a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for people over the age of 60, regardless of which vaccine they have been vaccinated with. Elderly people receive a booster dose at least six months after the second.
Such recommendations of the National Technical Group of Experts on Immunoprophylaxis (NTGEI) dated 23.12.2021 were approved by the order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine № 2976 dated 31 December 2021.
You can get a booster dose for people aged 60+ after 6 months from the date of another treatment with COVID-19, optimal in the period from 6 to 9 months.
For booster doses, m-RNA vaccines, Moderna or Comirnaty from Pfizer-BioNTech, are preferred, regardless of which vaccine the person was vaccinated with. Those who received the first two vaccines with CoronaVac from Sinovac Biotech are recommended to take a booster dose of Pfizer.
In the presence of mRNA vaccines, the booster dose can be made with another vaccine according to the ones allowed in Ukraine.
In order to receive a booster dose, a person aged 60+ can enroll in treatment at any vaccination point or center, provided that 6 months have passed since the second dose was given. List and contacts of points and centers – on vaccination.covid19.gov.ua/list or by phone 0 800 60 20 19.
providing that a booster dose in Ukraine can be obtained by medical workers and workers of nursing homes. As of January 3, 2022, 5,713 people have already received the booster dose.
For people who may not develop adequate immune protection due to severe comorbidities after two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, it is possible to receive an additional dose of vaccine. They can be treated 28 days after the main course.
The extra dose should not be confused with booster. It is recommended only for people with immune problems as part of the main course of vaccination. Its introduction does not affect the validity of the COVID certificate. As of January 3, 2022, 4,159 people have already received an additional dose.
