Toulouse: why the Capitol is illuminated in blue
The facade of the Capitol has been illuminated in blue since January 1. We explain why.
Since January 1, the facade of the Capitol has been illuminated in blue at nightfall. The town hall of Toulouse thus wishes to pay tribute to Europe and mark the French presidency of the European Union.
France took the rotating presidency of the European Union on Saturday January 1 for six months. It took over from Slovenia, which had chaired the Council of the EU since July 1, and gave way to the Czech Republic in the second half of the year.
This is the 13th rotating biannual presidency by France since 1958.
Symbol of this relay, the Eiffel Tower and the Elysée Palace were illuminated at the same time in blue, the color of Europe. Other symbols of French heritage were illuminated with the same color, including the town hall in Toulouse or the Occitanie regional council, in Toulouse and Montpellier.
From January 1, 2022, for the first time in 14 years, France will chair the Council of the European Union for 6 months. To represent this presidency, from January 1 to 7, the Occitanie Region will light up its Regional Hotels, in Toulouse and Montpellier, in the colors of Europe.
“The European Union is an opportunity and France must reaffirm it through its presidency. Today, 68% of French people feel European. The feeling of belonging is not inherited but is built day after day. In order for our fellow citizens to feel concerned by the decisions taken in Brussels, they must be regularly associated with them, declared the president of the Occitanie Region, Carole Delga. The Occitanie Region, already responsible for managing European funds, wants to go further. far in its international cooperation. “.
The facades of the communities will remain illuminated in blue until January 7.
