Fourth outbreak of bird flu confirmed in Portugal
sAccording to a DGAV edict published today, there are four outbreaks of avian flu detected in Portugal.
The last focus, confirmed this Monday, concerns, then, a home farm of chickens and ducks in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém. At issue are 60 birds.
On December 31, an outbreak of bird flu had already been confirmed on a farm in Perus, at Praia do Ribatejo, Vila Nova da Barquinha, district of Santarém.
Avian flu was detected in Portugal on December 2nd, in a homemade farm of chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys, in Palmela (Setúbal).
In the same month, a focus on commercial exploitation of turkeys for fattening in Óbidos, Leiria, was confirmed.
The outbreaks of infection now cover 24,239 birds.
“Following these events, the contingency plan for an avian claim was activated and as control measures provided for in the legislation, they were carried out on the ground by the DGAV”, he referred.
Measures include locating sites and establishing health restriction zones within a radius of three kilometers (protection zone) and 10 kilometers (surveillance zone) around each outbreak.
On the other hand, the disease surveillance was “intensified” in these areas.
The DGAV, which is a central service of the State’s direct administration, with administrative autonomy, had already recalled that there is no evidence that avian flu is transmitted to humans through the consumption of food, such as poultry meat or eggs.
