These 10 projects that will transform Toulouse in 2022
Each new year comes with its share of good resolutions and major transformations. Toulouse is no exception to the rule and is preparing to change its face with several major projects that will take place in 2022. The Journal Toulousain looks back on the 10 main ones.
The entry into service of the Téléo urban cable car
After a difficult start, following several technical and logistical disappointments, the Téléo urban cable car should be put into service in the second quarter of 2022. Linking the Oncopole to Paul-Sabatier University, the cabins boarded their first travelers at the end of April , after a month of “dry run” to make sure everything is working perfectly. Only then does the prefecture issue the operating license.
This project, initially carried by the previous majority of Pierre Cohen, had started in July 2019. Three years later, one of the longest urban cable cars ever built will make it possible to travel the three kilometers between the Oncopole and the faculty of medicine in 10 minutes.
Launch of the Low Emission Zone (ZFE)
“Everything is ready to launch the Low Emission Zone (ZFE)”, we told the Metropolis, through the voice of François Chollet, vice-president, in charge of ecology. However, the device is still not active. But for the community, it would only be a matter of weeks. Thus, in 2022, vans, vans and heavy goods vehicles which will display a crit’air 5 or unclassified sticker, will no longer be allowed to circulate in the area delimited by the signs. In 2023, those with sticker 4 will be subject to the same restrictions. Then it will be the turn of cars and two-wheelers with sticker 4, 5 and not classified in 2023-2024, and sticker 3 during 2024. Finally, in 2025, only vehicles bearing sticker 1 or 2, electric motors and with hydrogen after the authorization to circulate in town, in Toulouse.
Pedestrianization of rue de Metz
The rue de Metz rehabilitation project begins this year. It will lead to the pedestrianization, in part, of the track, from Boulevard Carnot to Rue Alsace-Lorraine. First of all, work on the various networks will take place in 2022, and then attack those inherent in the development in 2023. The new Toulouse artery will then consist of a two-way cycle path three meters long. wide, only one for motor vehicles, wide sidewalks on both sides and a green strip. As for the bitumen, it will be replaced by a paving stone coating. At the same time, rue Croix-Baragnon will also be redeveloped.
The Halles de la Cartoucherie is transformed
From a cartridge factory to the largest third place in France, the Halles de la Cartoucherie is getting a makeover. In this vast 15,000 m² space, “we want to create a hybrid place that will bring about both ecological and economic transition”, explains Sylvain Barfety, one of the site’s main investors. The work, which should take place over the whole year and end in 2023, will allow the development of a gourmet room of 3,000 m² where around thirty restaurant owners will attract their products. But also a dance school, an early childhood center, a sports center, a youth hostel, a cinema …
Renovation of the Saint-Michel district
In its program to rehabilitate the heart of the Saint-Michel district, the eponymous street will also undergo change. Indeed, this major traffic artery will pass in one direction, towards the city center, from February 2022, for a period of 10 months. Instead of the second traffic lane, a two-way cycle path will be set up. As for parking, it will only be on one side of the street. This is an experiment desired by the City of Toulouse to relieve congestion on the axis. This test is expected to remove 3,000 vehicles from traffic per day. Ultimately, the Municipality’s desire would be to develop a new neighborhood center in front of Saint-Michel prison, and extending from Boulevard des Récollets to Place Lafourcade. 2022 would therefore be the start of a project that could end in 2025.
Great upheaval at Matabiau station
As part of the redevelopment project of the Matabiau district, called Grand Matabiau Quais d’Oc, work is going well. Since 2017, it has gradually changed its face, as evidenced by the construction of the square in front of the station. And, from this month of January 2022, it is precisely the latter that this project will tackle. Indeed, the North underground will be closed for 18 months to be widened. It will then connect the platforms by elevators and escalators. Inside the station itself, work will begin in April of this year, for nearly a year. The objective is to build a shopping arcade there between the two existing rooms, with around fifteen signs to come.
Le Ramier or the future green lung of Toulouse
Toulouse-style Central Park. This is what the future Île du Ramier should look like in the long term. A large-scale project, called Grand Parc Garonne, which began with the relocation of the Parc des Expositions, now called the Meett, in 2020. It should be completed in 2025, when the 10 hectares of greenery will have replaced the concrete. For now, several halls have been razed and the parking lot in front of the Nakache swimming pool has been destroyed. Thus, throughout the year, soil fertilization operations will take place, until then waterproofed by the bitumen screed. The first plots of grass are to be accessible to the public in 2023.
The old CEAT gives way to a new district
Instead of the former Toulouse Aeronautical Test Center (CEAT), in Jolimont, the new Guillaumet district is preparing to emerge from the ground. 13 hectares in total, 78% of which will be dedicated to housing. In all, 1,200 housing units should be built there: social rental housing, housing dedicated to home ownership, part of which is social housing, etc. But also a third place, sports facilities, shops, household services. person, an urban farm, economic activities will complete the project. The first deliveries of buildings should take place at the end of 2022. To harmonize everything, a public garden of nearly one hectare will be developed.
The Capitol is getting a makeover
The town hall of Toulouse is entitled to a small facelift. A facelift that it had not offered since 1988. The work on the stones of the pediment of the Capitol was completed in 2021, a year late. From now on, it is the side facades to be pampered. Under the aegis of the Historic Monuments, the craftsmen will be busy there until September of this year. First on the one in the weight of oil street, from January to April, then on the one on the rue Lafayette, from May to October.
The third metro line goes into concrete
After the environmental public inquiry expires at the end of January 2022, calls for tenders for the works will take place. It is then that concrete things can begin for the third metro line in Toulouse. At the end of the year, the construction of the first tunnels should begin, as well as that of the viaduct at Labège and the underground and overhead stations. A project obviously spread over several years, which the Journal Toulousain will not fail to follow. It should end in 2028, according to the latest estimates from Tisséo.
