BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Commission is working on plans to label natural gas and nuclear energy projects as green investments. must be projects or meet a whole series of sustainability criteria, reports Reuters news agency that has seen a draft version of the plans.
The idea is to also label emissions in gas-fired power stations, if they only have a very limited CO2 footprint and replace a more polluting power station. The new power station can be regarded as a kind of intermediate phase that is of course not completely sustainable, but nevertheless contributes to the transition to cleaner energy.
That kind of criteria wants to arise is to prevent greenwashing. That is when companies of organizations pretend to be greener than they really are. But before that happens, Europe must first agree on what is really sustainable and good for the climate, and what is not. Developments in countries have been very divided on this for years.
According to Reuter Brussels in the concept of CO2 release permissible for ‘green’ gas-fired power plants than a group of key advisers to the committee previously had not eight would still eight. Nuclear power plants have very little CO2 emissions. The discussion is more about what to do with the radioactive waste from this way of generating energy.
The European Commission was not immediately available for comment. The concept is not the final proposal anyway. First, various experts will examine the plans, among others. The committee is expected to come forward with a proposal this month. After publication, the proposal can still be recognized by a majority of the EU countries by the European Parliament.
