COVID-19 cases from Portugal set a record, with Omicron dominating with 83%
LISBON, Dec 31 (Reuters) – Portugal hit a new record of 30,829 coronavirus cases on Friday, down from 28,659 the day before, with a fast-spreading Omigran variant all being evaluated in 83% of new cases, according to with official data.
The Health Authority has registered 18 deaths caused by DGS COVID-19 since Thursday, the 16th, but this is part of more than 300 deaths at the end of January, when Portugal launched its vaccination campaign.
The number of patients in intensive care was 145 and by early 2021 it was less than 900.
Portugal has one of the highest vaccination rates against COVID-19 in the world, with 87% of its 10 million inhabitants fully vaccinated.
Before New Year’s Eve, the government ordered the closing of nightclubs and bars, making it mandatory for people to enter hotels, casinos and restaurants to take the COVID – 19 tests, and limiting outdoor meetings to 10 people. see More information
