“Vaccination, an act of love for others”: Florence, the homily of Cardinal Betori
Florence, December 31, 2021 – “We are at a turning point in the now long story of the pandemic, a turning point that would have been a positive turning point, capable of leading us out of the crisis, and which instead is turning out to be a different form, but no less worrying than a story whose end is not yet in sight “, but” it is necessary to react to a climate of resignation, mistrust, even anguish that is insinuating itself in widespread culture and allowing oneself to be governed by hope “.
The cardinal said so Giuseppe Betori, Archbishop of Florence, in the homily for the Te Deum at the end of the year delivered in the Cathedral tonight. “Hope is something other than optimism – underlined Betori -. It is a new look at the world starting from a valid foundation “that is”God’s love for humanity“,” The trust that God has in us is the reason why we too must look to the time that awaits us with confidence, because, if we want it, it can become a time of salvation “,” a time of hope awaits us, well because God does not forget us founded. A time of responsible solidarity awaits us because in the storm we can only be saved together. These are decisive perspectives ».
«The virus changes – the cardinal also said Giuseppe Betori -, the precautions and precautions with it, but do not cease to protect life of our relations, threatening the stability of the economy and therefore the prospects of families, the conditions of most. The times of optimism are long gone, but unfortunately they are also eroding those of solidarity, with the insinuation of selfish behaviors, which undermine the responsibility and therefore the good of all. In this regard, the appeal to be vaccinated cannot be missing as an act of love towards others, as well as of objective defense against the most serious consequences for personal health ».
The cardinal then touched on the topic of the demographic decline: “The worrying demographic decline that afflicts our country is also linked to a fear, that of life and its responsibility, aggravated by the lack of consideration that widespread culture and legislative choices grant to the family e to the generation of children, all for the benefit of self-centered individualism, focused on rights and forgetful of duties and relationships. It is a fear to be defeated with the hope and courage that comes from it ».
