Floriade in Almere seventh edition in the Netherlands – Omroep Almere
From the Euromast in Rotterdam and the Amstelpark in Amsterdam to Venlo: the Floriade has left its mark in the Netherlands. In the spring 22 will leave the world construction exhibition and here too.
Once every ten years, Dutch horticulture and international participants show at this world horticultural exhibition what they can offer the world in terms of products and innovations. It is Almere’s turn for more than 100 days. The first edition was in Rotterdam. The Euromast is a lasting memory and is still visited a lot. The other editions in different cities have also visibly added to the environment.
The first Floriade took place in 1960. It was a cheerful whole, with even an ‘international garden terrace’. The Dutch Horticultural Council (NTR) was the initiator of the Floriade. The aim is to promote the image of Dutch horticulture at home and abroad. The N hoped to support the sale of the products. We can now safely say that this has been successful; The Netherlands is the second largest agricultural export in the world. The Floriade is therefore the largest event in the Netherlands for a reason.

1960 – Rotterdam
The Park, March 25 – September 25, 1960, ‘From Germ to Strength’
After the war there was a great need for ‘entertainment and information’. The first Floriade was in 1960, in Het Park in Rotterdam. The Euromast was a huge crowd puller and with 5 million visitors, the first Floriade was a resounding success.
1972 – Amsterdam
Amstelpark and Beatrixpark, March 30 – October 1, 1972
Two new parks have arisen from this Floriade: the Beatrixpark (behind the current RAI) and the Amstelpark. Visitors took a cable car over the route of the ring road, the covered exhibition halls (RAI) and the Amstelpark.
1982 – Amsterdam
Gaasper Park, April 8 – October 10, 1982
The Municipality of Amsterdam clearly saw the added value of a Floriade for the international promotion of the city and it was therefore decided to hold another Floriade in Amsterdam. The Floriade of 1982 was located in the current recreation area Gaasperplas, in Amsterdam Southeast.
1992 – Zoetermeer
Rokkeveen, April 9 – October 10, 1992
The Ecodrome, Aart de Aardworm, The Hague Pavilion and the appealing submission of the Water Boards attracted many visitors at the time. The various horticultural sectors also presented presentations in the form of a Cooking Theater, Greenhouse of the Future and various very large special plant and flower entries. There was also an art exhibition with work by, among others, Rob Scholte; his ‘Head’ was a big crowd puller.
2002 – Haarlemmermeer
Haarlemmermeerse Bos, April 6 – October 20, 2002, ‘Feel the art of nature’
One of the most important strategy for participation was the expansion of the structural green areas in the municipality. This was an impulse for the construction, realization and commissioning of a new infrastructure with a total surface area of 2,000 hectares. Particularly important was the accelerated construction of the N22 (later N205) and the public transport connection ‘Tangent’.
2012 – Venlos
Venlo Greenpark, 5 April – 7 October 2012, ‘Living nature’
The motivation for holding the Floriade 2012 in Venlo was the construction of a Greenport Business Park, where a knowledge cluster should be created in a business park of 45 hectares.
2022 – Almere
