“I take off my hat to Bobic!” – BZ Berlin
Thorben Marx (40) played for Hertha from 2000 to 2006, then went to Bielefeld and Gladbach. After 255 Bundesliga games, he ended his career in May 2015. He has been back in Berlin since October 2020. Now he speaks in a two-part interview.
BZ: Mr. Marx, who is your heart for now?
Thorben Marx: “I was allowed to play professional football for 15 years, had a great time everywhere, but my heart beats most for Hertha. This is the club where I grew up and which has shaped me the most. The time was very successful. “
How does the return feel?
I was away for 14 years, but home is home! My wife Jessica got back here in a heartbeat. Our daughters Noelle (14) and Lenia (12) also feel good. We live in the south of Berlin again, where my wife and I grew up.
You are assistant coach at BFC Prussia under world champion Thomas Häßler (55). How did that happen?
During my visit to the Olympic Stadium, I met their sporting director, Pierre Seiffert, and the request follows later. I’m very happy. I notice that after my career as a player, working as a coach has absolutely fulfilled me.
Which coaching certificates do you have?
None. I’ll tackle that next year.
How is it to work with a world champion?
Very pleasant. It’s fun, we complement each other well, we do everything hand in hand. For me as a newbie, that’s great.

As a Hertha professional you played with the current manager Fredi Bobic (50)! What memories do you have?
He’s always been a strong character, took care of us young players back then and was always straight forward. He represented the opinion of the team and even spoke out against the then strong manager Dieter Hoeneß. I don’t forget that to this day. If you do something like that, it can backfire quickly and you get sorted out. Fredi was the spokesman and wasn’t afraid. Before that I take off my hat.
Is he now the right person for Hertha’s new start?
So a restart takes time. The team is just below average. For a change you have to approach professionals and the office, and that is what it does. Fredi is absolutely the right person, also because his nature allows him to take a lot of people with him.
What are your sporting wishes for 2022?
That we can defend first place with BFC Preussen until the end of the season and train and raise many young players for our first men’s team.
