A singular painter
It was little known to the general public but very present in public collections in France and abroad. Théodule Ribot was a free and self-taught painter admired by his peers such as Fantin-Latour, Boudin or even Rodin. Of Rembrandt in Ribera, he drew his inspiration from the old painting while staying in tune with some of his contemporaries.
The taste for sociability, the attention paid to ordinary people, the austere simplicity of the objects and places represented, the choice of a tenebrist painting with a powerful chiaroscuro, are representative of the characteristics of Théodule Ribot’s painting. His art combines a taste for 17th century Spanish and Neapolitan naturalism to the roots of the painter’s art. This original marriage gave rise to quite unique, generous and moving works.
