The Italian conductor will conduct the orchestra of the Vienna Philharmonic for the New Year’s Concert 2022 Riccardo Muti, reconfirmed in the role that had belonged to him in 2021 and on five other occasions: 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2018.

The story of the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert
The first edition of the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert is dated to 1939. After the interruption due to the Second World War in 1940, the event recurs continuously from 1941 to today, with the music of composers from the Strauss family as protagonists.
Born at the time of the annexation of Austria to Germany, as a means of propaganda for the Nazi regime, over the years the concert has managed to definitively break free from Nazism to become one of the most famous musical events in the world.
The first time instead that the Vienna New Year’s Concert was broadcast on TV dating back to 1959, thanks to the presence of the Austrian state TV.
