This means the color of the passport
If you have gone through passport control in Norway or abroad, then you have probably noticed that there are different colors on the passengers. And now the color is also changing on the emergency passport in Norway. While the usual red passed, the color changed from the deep red color to a more «salmon red» color last autumn.
The color change
Most passages in the world are either blue or red. But you can choose a different color that you buy in travel equipment stores and at airports. You must be aware that a damaged passport is considered an invalid passport!
Norway is not the only country that has changed the colors of passengers over the years. The United States switched from green to blue in 1976, while Norway switched from bright red to burgundy red as they reduced the size of the passport to today’s slightly larger size.
This is the same as also the standard size for the rest of the world. But now it is the “salmon red” cover that covers new passports, while the old ones are valid expiration dates that are inside the passport.
Many Muslim countries have green passports, while a large number of African countries have black front and back.
New passes
On 19 October 2020, all the Norwegian crossings, with the exception of the emergency pass, received a new design and a slightly more salmon red color than the previous crossings. And now the emergency pass design changes from January 1, 2022 and the color changes from orange to white.
Did you know that we in Norway also operate with several different colors of passages?
The white passport
This is what we know as emergency passes and which were previously orange. If you do not have time to order an ordinary passport before you have to travel, you can in some cases have an emergency passport issued by the police.
From New Year, there are a number of police stations that no longer issue emergency passports. Check list here. Or search on police.no to get a list of places that issue emergency passports.
Also be aware that emergency passports are not issued by police stations on weekends and in the evenings.
– If you have to travel one of the next few days and do not find the red pass, then the emergency passport can be – yes exactly that: an emergency solution, says Tore Rossland in the Police Directorate.
Can be more expensive than the ticket
The emergency passport can be replaced with an express-delivered ordinary passport if the trip does not have to take place immediately.
For children and adults
– Emergency passports are issued to both adults and children. To obtain an emergency passport, you must book a trip abroad and show tickets / travel documents for this trip. You will not be issued an emergency passport if you travel from Tromsø to Oslo and think that it might be nice to have an emergency passport in case you decide to take a quick trip to Copenhagen. In that case, you must buy tickets for the trip to Denmark first.
The dark green
The dark green passport is not really a passport, but one travel documents issued to persons who have refugee status in Norway.
This is given to people who for various reasons can not apply for a passport in their home country. This is actually a travel document, and not a perfect passport. Validity is limited.
The blue-gray passport
This is an alien’s passport and it can be valid for 5 years. If you have a residence permit in Norway and you suddenly have to travel on an important trip abroad, you can also apply for a Norwegian lending passport for a single trip. It may not be possible for you to obtain a passport from your home country in time before you travel.
The red passport
This is the ordinary passport that you get when you apply for a passport in a regular way. From the time you apply for a passport until you receive it in the mail, it can take up to working days. Men since the manufacture takes place through special passport kiosks, the usual goes somewhat faster.

Turquoise color
Diplomatic passport has turquoise color (before 19 October 2020 it was red). A diplomatic passport is a passport used by a country’s diplomats or members of the government. This has also passed as the royal family spends on its foreign travels.
Service passports and special passports have a turquoise color issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to persons traveling on behalf of the Norwegian state.
As long as the passport is valid
Passports issued to persons over 16 years of age are usually valid for 10 years. But for children, the passports are shorter in validity. And remember that even a red passport is only valid as long as the owner can be recognized in the picture and as long as the passport is unchanged and undamaged. Since child is changing rapidly apply these time limits:
0-5 years: to years
5-10 years: three years
10-16 years: five years
Check the date
Be aware that some countries require that the passport be valid for a period after departure from the country you have visited. You will find updated information about this on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ (UDs) country pages, which among other things contain information about entry and exit regulations for different countries. Check validity of passport after departure.
Watch out for the insurance trap
Pass for everyone
All children must have their own passport, regardless of age. And even though Norwegian citizens can travel without a passport in the Nordic countries, it is a good travel advice to take it with you anyway. Because a lot of accommodations, airlines, etc. require passports. And additional ID checks can be introduced at the border at short notice.
