Corona protests in Munich: Mayor Reiter has had enough – “have to react now”
Update from December 23, 7:52 p.m .: After the partly violent Corona protests in Munich, Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) calls for consequences: “The protest leaders are no longer just about their protest against the Corona measures, but they are looking for a conflict with the state. All responsible security authorities have to react now to this new dimension of the protest ”, he explained. The peaceful demonstrators should see who they join.
The police union (GdP) in Bavaria also condemned the riots against police officers “in the strongest possible terms”. The freedom of assembly and expression is a great asset of the constitution, same country union leader Peter Pytlik. However, these freedoms end where the law is violated and the police are attacked on behalf of the state. “Grumblers and critical zeitgeist” have always existed in Bavaria – however, anyone who believes that the law no longer applies when taking an unauthorized “walk” if he is hiding in the anonymity of a crowd is subject to a misbelief, it said in the Communication from the GdP.

Giant queue in Munich’s center: Corona rule ensures waiting time

In the morning, around 80 people would have to wait at the same time to be admitted. Many Munich residents buy their Christmas gifts at the last minute. The fact that it takes a little longer with the Dallmayr also has to do with the 2G proof, which employees have to check for every customer. Similar waiting scenes could already be seen in the pandemic prev. observe.
Update from December 23, 7.49 a.m.: The schools in Bavaria could stay open even during a tough lockdown because of the Omikron variant. “Face-to-face teaching is and will remain the top priority,” said Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (Free Voters) in an interview with the German Press Agency in Munich immediately before the last day of school before the Christmas break on Thursday.
The minister cited three reasons in favor of continuing learning in school buildings: “Firstly, to ensure the educational mandate and the right to education, secondly because school is a place of social encounter and thirdly because we, thanks to the high safety standards and especially by testing in schools have helped flatten the last waves. Studies have shown that too. ”
Bavaria’s schools open even with a hard lockdown?
So it would have been counterproductive for the minister to close the schools again. A final decision cannot be made in view of the unpredictable developments in the pandemic, emphasized Piazolo. “Of course you always have to reassess the situation when things develop anew.”
Update from December 22nd, 9:40 p.m .: Almost 3,000 opponents of the corona measures demonstrated in Munich on Wednesday evening. According to the police, around 500 officers tried to prevent the so-called walks on Ludwigstrasse and in the district around Siegestor and the university. Most of the demonstrators did not wear mouth and nose protection and did not keep their distance from one another. A police spokesman said there were occasional scuffles at barriers, but no major disputes.

The most recent figures so far come from the Monday of the previous week. At that time, one case was confirmed and there were 26 suspected cases. As a case only confirmed after genome sequencing. This is a complex and lengthy laboratory process that, depending on the order situation, does not have to be carried out on a daily basis, as a spokesman for the health department said. Since Omikron is gold-plated as being particularly contagious, a delay of up to weeks is a long time span.
“The Omikron cases reported in Munich are those arriving from virus variant areas as well as cases within the Munich population,” said the health department. By the way: Close contacts to those who have tested positive for Omikron have to be in quarantine for 14 days – even if they have already been vaccinated or have recovered.
