Calais: a Vosges woman offers more than 20 tonnes of wood to an association of migrants
A resident of the Vosges has just offered 20 tonnes of firewood to the Auberge des migrants, an association located in Calais which helps refugees. A vital commodity that allows them to cook and heat themselves for at least several weeks.
A nice surprise for those in need. A Vosgienne has just offered the Auberge des migrants association, which helps refugees around Calais (Nord), more than 20 tonnes of firewood.
Pierre Roques, coordinator of Operation WoodYard within the association, reported to the Parisian that Cthis lady wished to remain anonymous: “She simply called on the number on our site. It is a very nice Christmas present for the more than 1000 people who survive here, especially in a context where this wood is becoming scarce, ”he explains.
A call for more donations
However, more will be needed to get through the winter. Even if he is grateful for this unprecedented gesture of solidarity, Pierre Roques recalls that the association needs “about eight to nine tonnes of firewood per week, and this at least until mid-April”.
The 20 cubic meters of wood can be used in three weeks. The Auberge des migrants is therefore hoping for other donations to make it through the winter.
In addition, several associations continue to describe the expulsions from camps for people in exile in the region. L’Auberge des migrants had tweeted a few days earlier: “While the temperatures are negative and no shelter solution is offered in Calais, the infernal litany of evictions continues”.
