After occupation in Berlin-Mitte: Plattenbau in Habersaathstrasse – homeless people are not allowed to move in – Berlin
Homeless people and activists occupied a house in Berlin-Mitte last weekend. For the short-term homeless, there was initially a sign of success, but now Mittes’ district mayor Stephan von Dassel (Grün) announced on Twitter that they would not move in before Christmas. The reason for this are problems with fire protection that are resolved beforehand.
A few days ago it was said that the short-term homeless would move in. According to Dassel, there is an “agreement” with the owner, according to which the homeless can temporarily live in the house. The squatters then left the house for the time being.
The activists who occupied the house with homeless people last Saturday had spoken of a “historic success”. The agreement with the district had set a precedent. “The criminal, speculative vacancy in Habersaathstrasse was finally ended.”
Von Dassel, on the other hand, had spoken of a temporary solution to prevent the police from evacuating the house. The prerequisite was that the squatters voluntarily leave the house again.
Last weekend around 30 activists from various housing policy initiatives occupied the prefabricated building in Habersaathstrasse opposite the BND headquarters. Around 150 supporters demonstrated in front of the house at the same time. The police cordoned off the house and at times also the street, but let the squatters die because the owner did not initially obtain an eviction permit.

Most of the 100 or so apartments in the building have been vacant for years. The owner wants to tear down the residential block and replace it with high-quality new buildings, but the district is resisting. Proceedings are pending before the administrative court, a spokesman for the squatters said on Saturday.
The owner is Arcadia Estates, which has been arguing with the district for years about the planned demolition of the residential block in a prime central location. The district would like to receive the 106 affordable rental apartments (around eight euros per square meter excluding rent), while Arcadia Estates is planning to build new, high-quality apartments.
