12-year-old boy seriously injured after being hit by tram in Antwerp (Antwerp)
A 12-year-old boy was fatally injured in a collision with a tram on Belgiëlei on Tuesday afternoon. His condition is currently stable. At the time of the accident, the traffic lights were not on due to road works in the Charlottalei. It is unclear of this directly affected the accident.
The accident happened around 1 pm on the Belgiëlei, near the Charlottalei. “The boy crossed the street with a children’s scooter, but was grabbed by a tram,” says Willem Migom, speaking of the Antwerp police. “The tram has called several times, but the boy has not.” It is currently uncertain whether the boy was scootering from his step in hand during the incident.
The tram has not yet braked hard, but was unable to make an emergency stop due to the crowds on the tram. The 12-year-old boy was released under the tram and was taken to hospital in critical condition. “At the moment he is no longer in life-threatening condition, but he is not seriously injured,” said Migom.
At the time of the accident, road works were underway in the Charlottalei. As a result, the traffic lights are not on. It is not clear whether this had direct consequences for the accident. The police came to the scene to place fences and make the traffic situation safer. The Charlottalei will remain closed until the works are completed.
