Corona: 1,907 new infections and chaos in numbers in Salzburg, 477 intensive care patients
From Monday to Tuesday, 1,907 new infections and 42 new corona deaths were reported in Austria. Too many new infections were initially reported from Salzburg, the correct number will be reported later on Wednesday. There is a slight decrease in intensive care patients.
Exactly 666 days after the first confirmed cases of coronavirus in Austria, the ministries reported 1,907 new infections within 24 hours on Tuesday – not including Salzburg. The Corona staff in Salzburg had previously communicated incorrect case numbers. Exactly how many have been added since Monday cannot be determined, the current numbers will be reported on Wednesday, according to the Ministry of the Interior in Vienna.
According to this, there were double counts of some omicron cases in Salzburg, with 621 too many new infections being reported. The Salzburg state staff reported to the ministry that no more current figures could be delivered from Salzburg on Tuesday. Correct figures should be presented on Wednesday.
Hospital numbers slightly declining
A further 42 fatalities were registered across Austria. In the almost 22 months of the pandemic, 13,538 people have already died as a result of an infection. The number of infected people in the hospital fell slightly again on Tuesday. There were still 1,705 Covid 19 patients in hospitals across Austria. That was 56 fewer than the day before. 477 seriously ill people are in intensive care units, one less than Monday. Within a week, the number of intensive care patients across Austria fell by 88.
In western Austria, however, utilization is still very high. According to AGES, 31 percent of the available intensive care beds in Tyrol are occupied by Covid patients, in Vorarlberg it is even 35 percent. This is above the system-critical load limit of 33 percent. In Tyrol there were 58 seriously ill people in intensive care units on Tuesday, fewer than 50 on November 27th when there were 48. Vorarlberg reported 25 seriously ill people. Most recently, a month ago – on November 21st – with 16 corona infected less than 20 were treated in intensive care units.
The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is also Vorarlberg with 385.2, followed by Tyrol and Carinthia (321.8 and 221.1 respectively). Then follow Upper Austria (209.7), Styria (187.3), Lower Austria (186.6), Vienna (175) and Burgenland (120.6).
The number of Covid deaths in Austria is still very high. 42 deaths have been reported since Monday alone, with a seven-day average of 36.6 per day. In the past week, 256 people died as a result of an infection. In total, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 13,538 lives in Austria since it broke out, which is already 151.6 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants.
The current figures for Austria (as of December 21, 2021, 9:30 a.m.): 1,907 new infections. 52,502 actively ill. 1,253,961 confirmed cases. 1,201,459 recovered. 13,538 deaths. 1,705 hospitalized, 477 of them intensive care.
