Finally, Toft and Denmark rejoice:
Denmark – Spain 35-28 (16-13)
The last time Denmark ended up on the podium in the championship was in 2013 when it ended with bronze in the World Cup.
– It feels unreal. I’m very relieved, and you looked at me. It means a lot, and I am very proud to receive a medal, says Sandra Toft to TV 2.
It was the first championship medal for the Danish goalkeeper profile, who played his 151st international match for Denmark.
– Every single championship, Danish journalists have to tell me that I was not there last time it was a medal. Well, I have said that I will never have that question again, says Toft.
Several of the Danish players cried with joy after the final signal sounded.
– The Danish national team has gone up and down in my time, but I have lacked a medal with Denmark. I am very proud to play with the flag on my chest, so therefore this means a lot. I am happy on behalf of the team, says Sandra Toft.
Denmark ran from Spain towards the break, and it was closer in front of 5000 spectators in Granollers.
At the start of the second round, the lead increased to 20-14, and there was no more left with the Spaniards.
The Spaniards abused a number of good finishing chances towards the end of the first round. This led to the Danes leading 16-13 at the break.
Denmark lost the semifinal 22-23 against France after leading 20-17.
