Luxembourg needs fresh blood for the holidays
After a year 2020 without any major problem with the stock of blood products, the end of 2021 could be a little more complicated, according to the Luxembourg Red Cross. The past year went well “thanks to the mobilization of donors”, despite the pandemic. But in the spring of 2021, the need for fresh blood is skyrocketing. “The demand from hospitals in the country has marked a strong recovery, going up to some months up to + 30% compared to last year”, points out Vincent Ruck-Hechenberger, communication officer of the Luxembourg Red Cross.
Suddenly, the end of the year could be complicated in the operating theaters. “This is a period during which, traditionally, we have fewer donors who come to see us: some go abroad, on vacation or with their families. As we are entering this period with already fragile stocks, we need people to mobilize – now, but also in January – so as not to find ourselves in a difficult situation, ”explains Vincent Ruck-Hechenberger.
Platelets, blood cells and plasma
However, the number of donors should be stable this year. “From one year to the next, it downloads more or less. In 2020, we had 13,726 registered donors, of which 1,505 made their first donation. We must remain in comparable figures this year ”. The problem of stocks, which was a little tight at the end of the year, is amplified by the recovery in demand from hospitals over the past eight months. A rebound probably linked, in particular, to the resumption of surgical interventions which had been reported when the Covid mobilized the hospitals the most.
The latter therefore need fresh blood, sometimes just in flow, for the platelets which can be stored for 5 days. Red blood cells can be kept for 42 days and plasma for up to several months. The Red Cross is therefore launching an appeal for donations as the holidays approach. People who have already donated can call 2755-4010 or write to [email protected]. Those who want to make a first donation in Luxembourg can contact 2755-4000 or send an email to [email protected].
