The chances of a championship title have increased.
-
However, coach André Breitenreiter urges caution.
The FCZ is winter champion. Due to the 1: 1 between YB and Basel, Zurich can no longer be driven from the top position in the first half of the season. For the first time since the 2008/2009 season, the FCZ is back in first place at the end of the year.
A look at the statistics shows that the chances of winning a real championship title have increased with the winter championship title. Since the reform of the Super League before the 2003/2004 season, even in 18 seasons, the winter champion was not at the top of the podium only four times. This was last the case in 2013, when GC classified after 18 games before Basel, but was overtaken by FCB in the end.
If everything goes well on the last day of the match, the Zurich team will be eight points ahead of their pursuers by the end of the year – a big advantage, but not decisive. In the 2005/2006 season, FC Basel were eight points ahead of FCZ after 18 games, but the people of Zurich turned up and took the championship title – maybe FCB’s revenge will take place this season.
«Just before closing, ask me about new goals»
For the people of Zurich, the winter championship title is nice, but no reason to celebrate, as FCZ coach André Breitenreiter said before the last game: “When we are winter champions, we can really be happy and all the companies can pat each other on the back. For a situation that we managed to have a nice time to celebrate Christmas. ” The German remembers the last few seasons: “The last three years you have played against relegation. Sometimes it happens quickly and you forget quickly. It shouldn’t lead to disappointment if you lose a game and you think the game has to be won by FCZ – no, the teams are on an equal footing, but we’re currently performing well. ”
The successful coach is of course happy about the table situation: “Nobody is forbidden to enjoy the moment. The team and fans haven’t seen it for a long time. ” The German also warned: “We would do well to approach every game as if it were the last.” The next game for FCZ is on Saturday against St. Gallen. The city breeders do not yet want to define new goals. He quotes his captain and goalie Yannick Brecher: “As Yannick once said in an interview, ask me again about goals five game days before the end.”
