This year, the Prague 10 district planted 63 trees for its new citizens
This year, 63 tree species were added to the tenth district. 33 of them were planted by the city district in the spring, 30 in the autumn. The new planting took place as part of the Trees for Newborns project. It has been operating at the Ten since 2007 and allows parents to have a tree planted for their newborn offspring.
All new trees are provided with signs with the first names of children, located in the future will grow. Each is dedicated to a maximum of ten new inhabitants of the Ten. “We always try to adapt the location of the trees as much as possible to the wishes of the parents. They usually want to have trees around their place of residence so that they and their offspring can go to see them regularly. You can then watch the trees grow together with their boy or girl, and at the same time this kind of tradition in children has naturally built a relationship with nature since childhood, ” says Jana Komrsková (Pirates), who is in charge of the environment at Vršovice City Hall.
Even the Trees for Newborns project did not remain completely immune to the covid pandemic. “Given the current situation, spring and autumn betting had to take place without the participation of parents and children. But we always sent them information about the second tree and the place of planting, including GPS location and photos of the relevant trees, ” instead of describing mayor Komrsková. Under normal circumstances, parents report if they want to participate in the project, they welcome citizens. In the current “covid period”, the ceremony is not taking place temporarily, so the town hall will be interested in arranging spring plantings for next year by phone.
There are already more than 4,500 trees for children born on the Ten, and the city district plants them across its entire territory. “We always think carefully about where and what types of wood we plant to make them fit.” states Jana Komrsková and the requirement that trees have not only an aesthetic but also a thermoregulatory function in public space.
So far, the last planting took place in the autumn of this year, the most common tree was the hornbeam. You can find a list of planted trees for children born by year here.
