The seven-member government of the Canton of Zurich has declared the President of the Zurich SVP as a member of the National Council as elected. The 30-year-old replaces the previous SVP national councilor from Zurich, Hans-Ueli Vogt, who is retiring from the large chamber prematurely.
The successor to the City of Zurich SVP National Councilor Hans-Ueli Vogt is sealed: The Zurich Government Council has elected the President of SVP Zurich, Benjamin Fischer, as. The government council wrote this in a media release on Friday. The 30-canton council replaces the 52-year-old Vogt, who will resign from the National Council on December 31, 2021 for personal reasons.
Fischer had landed on the first substitute place in the last National Council elections and was thus placed as his successor.
«I want to be a worthy successor»,
Fischer told the commuter newspaper at the end of November “20 minutes». Actually, despite a mandate from the National Council, he should remain in the cantonal council. “For reasons of time” he wanted to resign from the cantonal council before taking office, where he has been politicizing since May 2015. His party colleague, the Dübendorf councilor Patrick Walder, will move up for Fischer in the cantonal council.
At the age of 23 he became a cantonal councilor
One of his main concerns as a National Councilor will be security policy, a positive fisherman who is the presidium of the Commission for Social Security and Health in the Cantonal Council. He told the newspaper:
“A pandemic and a blackout are the greatest dangers of our time.”
The pandemic showed how unprepared Switzerland is, said Fischer. Therefore, the energy supply must be guaranteed. “A massive blackout opens the door to cyber and terrorist attacks!”
The farmer’s son has had a career in politics so far. At the age of 16 he joined the Junge SVP, at 21 he became president of SVP Volketswil and actuary of SVP Uster district. In 2015, Fischer made it on the second attempt at the age of 23 as the youngest member of the Zurich Cantonal Council. From 2016 to 2020 he was President of the Young SVP, and the business economist has been President of SVP Canton Zurich since 2020.
He is for the legalization of cannabis
Fischer positions himself clearly on the SVP line in many issues such as foreign, security and immigration policy. He sometimes drifts away on socio-political issues: For example, he spoke out in favor of the legalization of cannabis or the right of adoption for gays. He explained: “I stand behind the traditional family. But you also have to acknowledge that social reality is different today than it was 50 years ago. “
In addition to politics, the first lieutenant worked as a project manager until his recently completed master’s degree. He is currently looking for a job. “Politics must remain suitable for the militia,” he emphasized to the “Glattaler”. Fischer lives in Volketswil, is married and has a two-year-old son. (sho)
