Derailed S-Bahn blocks north-south tunnel – only S1 drives through again
A derailed S-Bahn train at Friedrichstrasse station leads to disruptions in Berlin’s north-south traffic at least until Saturday. The clearance work is extremely complicated. For the time being, only die S1 can drive again without interruption.
On the north-south line of the Berlin S-Bahn, after a train derailment in Friedrichstrasse station, a track is again accessible – however, S-Bahn traffic on the route remains severely restricted.
Only the S1 line runs every 20 minutes between the Potsdamer Platz and Nordbahnhof stations, also with a stop at Friedrichstrasse station, a railway spokesman announced on Thursday evening.
For the other three lines – S2, S25 and S26 – this section of the route remains completely closed. These lines go to Potsdamer Platz or Südkreuz and to Oranienburger Straße or Nordbahnhof. This condition will remain in place until at least the start of operations on Saturday morning, the spokesman said. The derailed train must first be towed and the infrastructure repaired immediately.
The replacement bus service between Potsdamer Platz and Nordbahnhof was discontinued on Thursday evening, as the S-Bahn announced on Twitter. If you can, you should drive around the area extensively – either with the subway or the ring train.
According to the Federal Police, 30 passengers were on the S2 train on Thursday night when the car derailed; she was therefore unharmed. The train drove fully into the station.
Technicians are on site with rescue equipment. By late Thursday afternoon, the wagons were separated to allow access to the turnstile. Ultimately, the wagons should be lifted back onto the rails and the train then towed away. It is still unclear why the bogie emerged from the rails.
The track, which has been put back into operation, also has to be repaired as soon as the clearing and salvage work is completed, as the S-Bahn reported on Twitter. This means that at least one track should still not be passable beyond Saturday.
According to initial findings, there are no indications of any effects by third parties. Nevertheless, the federal police are investigating the initiated causes together with the federal railway investigation agency. The Federal Police are currently looking for witnesses who were on the train themselves or who were on the platform at the time of the incident.
