Women’s Health Center Salzburg helps with specific needs
A heart attack can affect both women and men. Although women would often die from it because they would receive later treatment due to other symptoms, denounces the manager of the Women’s Health Center Salzburg (FGZ), Aline Halhuber-Ahlmann, in an interview with SALZBURG24. “The special situations of women are not considered scientifically in research, nor in diagnostics or therapy.”
What does women’s health center do?
The experts also do not deal exclusively with those areas that are ostensibly “women’s issues”. In addition to providing information about heart attacks, the association is also committed to providing information about the effectiveness of various medications or providing support in dealing with psychological problems, chronic illnesses or other life challenges. “The women’s health center takes into account all health issues that affect women differently, more frequently or with different symptoms,” summarizes Halhuber-Ahlmann.
Eating disorder affects girls and women
Eating disorders are another present topic. “Girls are judged more on their being, not on what they do.” This is why they would often “tinker” with their appearance, for example. More young girls are affected by anorexia, and parents usually seek advice here. Bulimia is often not recognizable from the outside, and adults can also struggle with it. Although eating disorders would increase in boys too, they manifest themselves in a number of ways. Boys are more likely to pursue unrealistic bodybuilding goals, while girls often try to be as slim as possible, notes Halhuber-Ahlmann.
Open-ended consultations
Women can also get help with pregnancy conflicts. “It is very important that all consultations are open-ended. We don’t tell women what to do. They should be able to live well with their decisions. “
Support in the city and state of Salzburg
In order to support girls and women in their decisions about their physical and mental health, workshops, lectures and discussions are offered in addition to advice. In 2020 there were around 500 consultations, half of which affected women from the city, the others came from the regional regions.
to die offers are low-threshold, free and anonymous and possible both in presence with the 3-G rule and mask, as well as online. In villages in particular, there is often concern that too many people will notice when you are looking for help, says Halhuber-Ahlmann. Therefore, the location in the state capital and the online option would have certain advantages. Nevertheless, regional days with on-site workshops are also offered.
Offers for life challenges
Basically, the offers are geared towards life challenges in different phases.
- Youth / puberty
- Mother phase
- Menopause
- Older age
Environment can be “difficult”
Depending on the phase, the needs would differ, explains the managing director of the FGZ. During puberty, the first period and the tabooing of the female body is an important topic. Mothers often have to struggle with massive time problems. And menopausal women are often portrayed as “difficult”. “It is often the conditions and the environment that are difficult.”
Political pressure
In addition to individual health, the association is also committed to improving social framework conditions. “We want to take the side of women and support them. Of course we are partisan and we also put pressure on politics. ”Because not every woman has the opportunity to choose their living conditions in such a way that they are beneficial to their health.
The offers of the women’s health center are aimed at all women and girls who need support. One group is particularly difficult to reach: young women from apprenticeships or polytechnic schools. “We have the feeling that they are quick in their professional life and often come up short there.” Halhuber-Ahlmann concludes that they want to counteract this even more in the future.
