She dances, poses and smiles. The drawing called “Naked Woman” by the famous Toulouse composer and singer Claude Nougaro is still full of life. It will be auctioned this Wednesday, December 15 at 2:30 p.m. by Artcurial, in the Vitry auction room (6 rue Urbain Vitry) in Toulouse. The day before, the painting will be exhibited from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is estimated between 2,000 and 2,500 euros.
The artwork, made of pastel, gouache and pencil on card stock measures 65 by 50.5 centimeters. It was produced in 1957, when the artist released his first successful title “Direction Venus”. However, the singer did not see his career take off until five years later, with the release of the music “Une petite fille” and “Cécile ma fille”, dedicated to her child. Throughout his life, Claude Nougaro produced nearly 200 works, most of which, representing faces, are united in the “Claude Nougaro” association.
A canvas teeming with details
“Naked woman” is made up of multiple colors. Some dark, in particular the background of the canvas and the body of the woman represented naked. Others more vivid all around, like red, yellow, blue and green.
As complex as it is, the work reveals all kinds of details: men dancing on the young woman’s hips, arrows, a flower. The bull’s head, drawn in the left corner, represents him discreetly. Indeed, the artist painted in 1996 a “self-portrait” on a pink background, which features a large head of the well-known animal from the South of France, dressed in a polka-dot bow tie.
This last work was also the subject of an auction of the Artcurial house in Toulouse in 2015. The price was estimated at 1,500 euros. It was finally auctioned for 9,000 euros in favor of a Toulouse buyer.
