We claim the World Air Race Championship for Thessaloniki
The Municipality of Thessaloniki plans to bring the World Air Race Championship to the city next year, as the mayor announced today
One of the most exciting motorsport championships in the world, the Air Race World Championship, plans to bring to the city in 2022 o Municipality of Thessaloniki, as made known by Mayor Konstantinos Zervas, speaking tonight at the City Council.
Noting that “the big events in the city are our promise”, Mr. Zervas characteristically said that the Air Race races are by analogy “a formula 1 in the air” and constitute a world sports event with 51 television broadcasts, with participation from 187 countries, with approximately 511 million viewers and at least 2.5 internet interactions and many parallel events.
“This extroversion in practice with a significant economic footprint”, notes the mayor of Thessaloniki, adding that the attraction of international events leads to a global profile for Thessaloniki and a huge challenge for the economy and the local community.
Spectators from all over the world in Thessaloniki
The issue of organizing the World Air Race Championship, after a relevant suggestion of the municipal authority, will be discussed at tonight’s meeting of the Municipal Council of Thessaloniki. As it is emphasized, the organization of a global event of this scope will promote Thessaloniki as an urban tourist destination at the international level and will rank in the map of the host cities of world sports events.
Motor sports is a powerful lever for the development of both sports tourism and the cities that host these events. Air Race races are hosted in cities such as San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, St. Petersburg, Berlin, etc.
The event, in fact, has an important ecological sign, as the World Championship Air Race (WCAR) includes new zero-carbon aviation fuel.
