Rouen. A first draft of the future metropolitan cycling network unveiled

The card potential future cycling network of the Rouen Normandy metropolis will be presented during the metropolitan council Monday, December 13, 2021. This hierarchical network on two levels should include more than 200 km of cycle paths, and “in the long term, it is 300 km that can be identified”, according to the vice-president in charge of transport, mobility of The future and active modes of travel, Cyrille Moreau.
It is still a version aimed at provoking debate among elected officials – around thirty municipalities were consulted – and drawn up “with user associations”. “We simply present the card on Monday, not the cycling plan, which will be presented in spring 2022 and will include the refined map, as well as the action plan with all the cycling services. “
Bitter discussions in sight
We find on this document the express bike network (Tower), level 1, made up of approximately 150 km of secure cycle paths allowing rapid movement in the various towns of the metropolis. It was imagined by analyzing the modes of travel from home to work and works, like bus lanes, with a number system, and a colored asphalt to distinguish the tracks from the roadway.
The different tracks of the Rev are connected to track number 1, a kind of central ring allowing to walk at the level of Rouen. Work is scheduled for 2022-2023. Total cost: 55 million euros. This network is supplemented by the route of the Seine by bike, and by an interconnected bicycle network (Riv) which constitutes a secondary local level 2 network, in the various zones served by the Rev.
If the structuring lines of the Rev are acted on, those of the Riv – “the little, shorter sisters of the Rev”, according to Cyrille Moreau – are not final and will have to be the subject of bitter discussions between elected officials.
“By 2026”
This future network is based on existing equipment, but also on new developments, as will be the case for Boulevard de l’Europe, for example, includes on the route of track 1 of Rev. 2026, 165 km of cycle paths will be created ”, indicates the Metropolis.
Cyclists will have to wait a few more powers to take advantage of these developments, and perhaps to see the modal part of the bike, which has stagnated at 1% in the Metropolis of Rouen for a decade, evolve.
This first version of the future cycling network also includes a few black spots, which should fuel the discussions between elected officials for the coming months. Among them, the connection with the eastern plateaus of Rouen, which should make a detour via Darnétal and not go through Bonsecours, a solution which seems simpler in terms of route. The Cailly valley, but also the connections between Rouen and the municipalities located in the North are part of the axes to be improved according to some elected officials and associations.
