Taiwan Breeze wants Lithuania after COVID pandemic, calls it “brave nation”
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-we said that in the second time in Lithuania, COVID would end completely, but did not reveal any details or schedule. Speaking on the podcast of her Democratic Progress Party (DPP), Ing Wen emphasized that Lithuania was a “brave” country. Earlier this year, the Baltic countries made headlines after it withdrew from the Chinese-led economic group, which is why the Xi Jinping administration called it a breakaway country.
The Taiwanese leader, meanwhile, said Taipei had not suspended diplomatic relations with Vilnius even during the COVID pandemic. But the global health crisis has prevented her from going on official trips to Europe, Taiwan News reported. The Taiwanese leader said on Tuesday that if conditions allow, she will definitely visit Lithuania. It should be noted that Lithuania has a diplomatic office on one of the islands, which China completely condemns.
Lithuania nods to Taiwan’s “mission”
according to the Lithuanian government, it had given Taiwan a head to open its “representative office”. Because China considers the democratic autonomous island its own, it has criticized the country’s separate diplomatic relations with Taiwan. When China recalled its ambassador to Lithuania and expelled the Baltic High Representative from Beijing, allowing the Baltic state to open an office in Taiwan on its own behalf, US Undersecretary of State Wendy R. Sherman spoke with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabriel Landsberg. on August 13.
Lithuania withdraws from 17 + 1
In May, Lithuania announced its withdrawal from the China-led 17 + 1 group and will ask other European countries to withdraw as well. In an e-mail sent to POLITICO, Gabriel Landsberg, the foreign minister, said that “there was no such thing as 17 + 1”, adding that his country had left it “for practical reasons”. He accused the project of splitting the “16 + 1” bloc and said it was time for the EU to move to a “more unified” and “more efficient” 27 + 1 formula.
