These calibers threaten Salzburg in the round of 16
Football champions Red Bull Salzburg will face a European heavyweight in the first Champions League round of 16 in club history.
The seven possible opponents Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus Turin and Ajax Amsterdam combine more than half of all titles awarded so far in the Champions League or their previous championship championship.
With the exception of ManCity, which has not yet won the short European club competition, all possible opponents are at least two-time champions. One of these six clubs has triumphed in 34 of 66 seasons played in the championship or Champions League. Record winner is Real Madrid, the club of ÖFB star David Alaba, with 13 triumphs, six of them in the championship cup and seven in the 1992 Champions League.
The draw for the round of 16 pairings will take place on Monday lunchtime (12 noon) at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon. As runners-up in the group, Salzburg will play the first leg at home. Game dates are the 15./16. or 22./23. February. In the second leg, the respective group winners then have home rights, Salzburg must also play away. The decision about the ascent will be made on the 8th / 9th. or 15./16. March.
