“The Monster of Florence. Lies and truths”, Thursday the documentary on TV – Chronicle
Florence, December 7, 2021 – I. crimes that terrified Florence on air Thursday 9 December, in prime time, on Rai Due. The third appointment of the Rai Documentari Crime Doc series is “The Monster of Florence: That silence that is not silent – Lies and truth”, A co-production of Rai Documentari and Verve Media Company, subject by Luciano Palmerino and Giuseppe Rinaldi, directed by Alessandro Galluzzi. It is preceded by a preview in which Gianrico Carofiglio, writer and former magistrate, will be a show within the story of this dramatic story.
In the documentary, i contributions by the journalists of La Nazione, Amadore Agostini and Stefano Brogioni. But the protagonist is the case of crime news for excellence. A series of eight double murders, 16 innocent victims, which took place between 1968 and 1985 in the Tuscan province that terrorized the country and upset its social equilibrium, writing one of the darkest and most complex pages of contemporary Italian criminal history.
No crime news has frightened Italian families as much as the crimes of the Monster of Florence and no other investigation has divided public opinion and the judiciary so much, and continues to be discussed today. A powerful and dark story that filled TV broadcasts and newspaper pages, becoming the first criminal case to inaugurate the media spectacularization of justice in our country. The sentences in three different levels of judgment have established that that of Florence is a three-headed Monster, those of Pacciani, Vanni and Lotti.
But the procedural truth does it coincide with the reality of the facts? Today, more than 50 years after the first murder, the docuseries asks these questions and retraces the “novel” of the Monster of Florence, recounting the investigations with its many leads, the wars between the prosecutors, the psychosis of the monster in the ’80s, the Pacciani trial and that of the “Snack companions”, Through the testimonies of the protagonists and the precious photographic video repertoire images that tell an era.
Thanks to a careful and scrupulous re-reading of the investigations, evidence, testimonies and procedural documents, and through the analysis of the crime scenes by technicians, witnesses and experts, the dynamics of some of those crimes comparing them precisely with the investigative and procedural evidence. Because there are only two certainties: that the same pistol, a 22-caliber Beretta, killed 16 lives behind it, a long trail of blood and questioning and that for six victims (three of the eight double crimes), no one has yet been sentenced to date.
