The first pilot biomethane distribution projects in Greece are in the process of implementation
The first pilot biomethane distribution projects in Greece are entering the implementation trajectory, as DEDA submitted an application to the Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE) in order to be granted a license for the reception and distribution of biomethane in low and medium pressure networks it manages.
The application concerns the temporary licensing of DEDA, until the overall institutional / regulatory framework for the development of the biomethane market as a distributed fuel gas in our country is institutionalized. Biomethane will be produced from agricultural and livestock residues, as well as the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. Therefore, its production has a significant contribution to the development and activity of the circular economy in our country.
The first pilot projects of biomethane distribution of DEDA are planned to be used in the prefectures of Serres and Imathia within 2022 and the holistic approach of the company for the development of the biomethane market in Greece: from production, injection, distribution, sale and use.
In this context, DEDA has already reached an agreement with two existing biogas plants, which will participate in the pilot projects, to upgrade them to biomethane plants, which will then be registered in the adjacent low and medium DEDA networks. pressure and will be distributed in combination with natural gas for domestic, commercial and industrial purposes.
According to a relevant announcement, it proceeded to apply for a biomethane distribution license, DEDA had already prepared studies in order to map the potential of the available raw materials for the production of biomethane in all the areas in which it operates. It has also prepared specific proposals, which it will submit to the competent bodies within the next few days, for the necessary legislative and regulatory additions to the existing distribution framework to develop the biomethane market.
The injection of biomethane into the gas distribution networks is intended for the same uses as natural gas, ie it concerns households, businesses and industry, while supporting taxpayers.
In the statements of the executives, the advisor of DEDA, Marios Tsakas, spoke about a very important project for the active events of the country. As he said, “DEDA is the first Natural Gas Distribution Manager in Greece that distributes, through its networks, renewable gas fuels with a minimum of zero carbon footprint, such as biomethane. From our pilot projects, which will start from Serres and Imathia and will be extended to other additional areas of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, useful conclusions will be drawn for all activities related to the development of the biomethane market in our country. as well as for the best practices to be applied “he noted.
He added that “with this important initiative, DEDA ensures the compatibility of the infrastructure that manages the new energy axes, contributes to the development of the circular economy and maximizes the benefit of consumers.”
