Depression Bar. Mainland Portugal with rain and sea from Tuesday
Mainland Portugal will be affected as of Tuesday by sometimes persistent rain, strong seas and wind, resulting from the passage of the Barra depression, meteorologist Maria João Frada told Lusa.
Although the depression has no direct impact on the continent, the cold frontal surface associated with it will approach from Tuesday and cross the entire territory until late Wednesday morning, explains the Institute meteorologist Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA),
“The Barra depression is a very shallow depression, it is a high depression at its center which is in the North Atlantic well northwest of the Azores and will move from east to northeast towards the British Isles. It does not directly influence the state of the weather in mainland Portugal, but some side effects, “he said.
Associated with depression, explained Maria João Frada, is a cold surface that will pass on Tuesday (7th) and which has some activity and will give persistent rain, especially in the northern and central regions, mainly in Minho and Douro Litoral, and it will sometimes be strong in the front passage and accompanied by thunderstorms and wind intensification, which will be temporary.

The rain will then spread to the entire territory of the continent.
The exclusion occurrence will be snow, especially on Wednesday, above 1,100 / 1,200 meters, and may reach 800 / 1,000 meters in the mountains in the extreme north of the continental territory.
The effects of depression will also be felt at sea as marine depression increases.
“We’re going to have waves that will gradually increase on the west coast from 07 [terça-feira] and will increase later in the day to yellow warning in the northern and central northern districts of Cabo Mondego with waves from the northwest of 4 to 5 meters. on the 8th [quarta-feira] the waves will increase to 5 to 6 meters, as part of the orange warning, with a maximum height that can reach 12 meters”, he said.
According to a meteorologist, this scenario covers the entire western coast of northern Cape Espichel.
“on the 9th [quinta-feira] the waves tend to decrease to 4 to 5 meters, but still with yellow warning, “he said.
IPMA also foresees an intensification of the wind on the coast with gusts of 60 and 70 kilometers per hour and in the highlands between 85 and 90.
“The intensification of the wind will give an increased feeling of cold, will increase the thermal discomfort”, he highlighted.
As for the temperatures, Maria João Frada says they will go down, but it has nothing to do with the passage of depression.
“After the front surface, we will have the transport of a polar air mass on Wednesday already coming from the north and we will have a small drop in temperature, especially in the highs and in the northern and central regions and Alentejo that can reach the 5 to 8 degrees, “he counted.
The minimum temperatures will vary between 6 and 10/11 degrees Celsius in some parts of the coastal strip, in the interior north and center they do not exceed 3 to 4 degrees and in Serra da Estrela they will be negative from -1 and -2.
As maximums, they will oscillate between 10 and 15 degrees, slightly higher in some places along the coastal strip (17) and much lower in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta (between 6 and 8) and Serra da Estrela will be less than 5.
“This situation is temporary and on the 9th [quinta-feira] the maximum temperatures go back to rise 2 to 5 degrees “, he said.
