Homeless families find refuge in a municipal gymnasium
While the cold is there, 250 people are still sleeping outside in Toulouse, according to the collective
Right to Housing (DAL 31). And since Friday 39 of them, including 21 children, have made the choice, guided by associations to help the homeless, to get warm. They occupy the municipal gymnasium in the Saint-Sernin district, in the city center.
Since then, life has been organized in the building. “Donations from residents began to flow, including hygiene products, masks, hydroalcoholic gel,” said a speaker from the DAL on Sunday. Easy-to-prepare foods are welcome as cooking is not possible in the gym.
The first contacts were made with the State services without them being informed of the time for accommodation solutions for these families. The mobilized collective * calls for “dignified and adapted accommodation solutions for all homeless people in the metropolis” and “strengthening of the 115 teams”, the service which guides the homeless.
One more place planned for this month
Last week, the prefecture announced the strengthening of its winter reception system, with in particular “the opening of a hundred places during the month of December to allow the shelter of the most vulnerable”, in addition to the 1,924 permanent emergency accommodation places.
