In the city of Salzburg, the renovation of the vigilante group on Mönchsberg will be completed these days. Work has been going on on the defensive wall since spring, and extensive security work was also carried out.
Bricks that had become loose or were missing were supplemented or renewed with great craftsmanship. The vigilante group on Mönchsberg was built between 1487 and 1488. The fortification was supposed to protect the city at the natural bottleneck of the city mountain. For this purpose, the defensive wall was provided with six towers and upstream positions, called forcing.
Restoration of components that support the site
The citizens of Salzburg were responsible for the defense and not the troops of the then Prince Archbishop. Currently, the craftsmen of the monument preservation are still busy with the final fine work for the final design.
“The restoration involves those parts that are constructive and support the site. These are components that are heavily exposed to nature and the weather and therefore work is very laborious and expensive because you have to use manual labor, ”says Eva Hody from the Federal Monuments Office.
Renovation makes the dimension of the bricks visible
As a result of the renovation work, the dimensions of the bricks in the defense structure are now also visible. There is also a special assignment for master stonemason Erich Reichl. “The first challenging step for us was the exposed wall in the direction of the city, where we usually anchor the base for the Ge with a rope in the rock, but we also secure elements that are at risk of falling and carry out fine work.”
Three out of six defense towers are inhabited
The renovation of the vigilante group costs around 1.3 million euros. It is part of the city’s defensive walls, which are around nine kilometers long. “The defensive walls are a very important part of the city’s history, a lot of life, love and struggle is anchored here – everything that defines a city. Some of them cannot be seen, but they are there and testify to the past centuries, ”says City Councilor Martina Berthold from the citizens’ list. Life in it also contributes to maintaining the vigilante group, as three of the six towers are inhabited.
