Corona has been causing the highest death rate in Salzburg for 60 years
In 2020 there were 5,194 deaths in the state, more than since 1961. The increase over the previous year is also the highest value in the 63 records with 4 more.
Corona ensures excess mortality in Salzburg
“The excess mortality in 2020 can be read very clearly from the data. It is given when the number of deceased persons is significantly above the level of previous years and this can no longer be explained with random fluctuations. A similar development is emerging for this year as well. Already at the beginning of the year there was a noticeable excess mortality in the first months and since mid-October the number of deaths has again risen significantly above the level of the years before the start of the pandemic, “said Gernot Filipp, Head of State Statistics, in a broadcast on Tuesday.
Slight population growth in Salzburg
At the beginning of the year, 2,300 more people lived in the State of Salzburg than in 2019, a total of 560,710. This 0.41 percent population increase is the lowest since 2012.
Break in the yes-word
There was a significant decrease in marriages in Salzburg. While there were still 3,040 weddings in 2019, there were only 2,589 mutual yes-words in 2020, a decrease of 14.8 percent. The number of registered partnerships closed, however, increased by 15 to 73.
The city and the suburbs are growing significantly
At the beginning of the year, 155,416 people lived in the state capital. The Flachgau has steadily caught up and is now only 792 behind the state capital. This gap halved in the course of 2020. If this development continues, Flachgau will replace the state capital as the most populous district from 2022. The Tennengau also grew similarly to the state capital and was able to increase by 6.6 percent to 60,992 inhabitants in the last ten years.
For the first time more than 10,000 people in Zell am See
The Gebirgsgaue were below the national average: 4.6 percent growth for the Pinzgau to 88,168, whose district capital Zell am See broke the 10,000 mark, and 4.2 percent for the Pongau to 81,392 inhabitants. The Lungau lost 709 citizens during this period and had 20,118 inhabitants at the beginning of the year, 3.4 percent less than 2011.
