Abortion, San Marino participates in the law – CSR Swiss radio and television
Until last September the Republic of San Marino it was one of the last European states to punish abortion with prison, both for the woman and for the consenting doctor. The citizens of San Marino were thus forced to cross over into Italy, incurring expenses and burdens, for what their own country did not recognize as a right.
L’Union of San Marino Women (UDC), the historic association of the small republic of Titan, has therefore decided to propose a referendum to allow women to no longer have to go abroad to terminate their pregnancy, in hiding.
The vote was held last September 26, which clearly sanctioned the will of the San Marino citizens: more than three quarters of the approximately 14,000 voters said yes to the right to abortion. Now it is up to politics to translate this popular will into law. Vanessa Muratori And Selena Simoncini, UDS activists, were two direct protagonists of this historic change for their country, which they hope will give the start to a new wave of rights, equality and emancipation for their fellow citizens.
