Paris XIIe: new, more ecological platforms for canteens
Stainless steel replaces plastic, which is heavier and requires a lot of water to wash, while organic products continue to grow.
“All the pupils of the 21 kindergartens of the 12th grade now have lunch in new stainless steel trays, lighter and more ecological, manufactured by the company Guy Degrenne in Normandy. These trays have the advantage of being much less heavy (-1 , 15kg compared to the classic tray) and to promote children’s food autonomy, thus limiting food waste “, explains the town hall, while these new equipment have taken place in school canteens.
For staff, working conditions “are improved with a reduced washing time (less dishes) as well as a reduction in the loads to be carried to fight against musculoskeletal disorders”, continuation of the proceedings.
These new trays are part of an approach to reducing plastic, which includes the elimination of cling film to wrap sandwiches and most single-use items (water bottle and disposable dishes).
In addition, in this 2021 school year, the proportion of organic, labeled and sustainable food offered to children has reached 70% (including 64% of products from organic farming). This should increase further in this year to reach 100% organic and sustainable food in the canteens of the 12th district by 2026. “A reflection has also been initiated by the Menus Commission of the School Fund regarding the introduction of a second weekly vegetarian menu”, continuation of the town hall.
