No more single-use plastic in Monaco!
By 2024, single-use plastic will disappear in Monaco. The Principality presented a plan last October. Objective: gradually reduce single-use plastic. A daily battle since this pollution has very heavy consequences on both biodiversity and health. It also worsens global warming and the cost of its treatment remains high. As a reminder, plastic is produced on the basis of hydrocarbons. It never really disappears from nature but breaks up into smaller and smaller pieces. Then, it poisons the entire food chain, water and air. Moreover, according to a WWF study, we ingest nearly 5 grams of plastic per week, the equivalent of a credit card!
Leave the plastic
Monaco has already looked into plastic in 2016 by abandoning straws and stirrers, then disposable cutlery, confetti, or even the release of balloons. This new plan will come into effect from 2022. On that date, plastic toys will disappear from children’s menus in certain restaurants. Goodbye, too, packaging around certain fresh fruits and vegetables.
The take-out catering sector will no longer be able to systematically provide free plastic cutlery.
Then, from 2023, restaurants will no longer provide disposable cutlery for meals taken on site.
Then, in 2024, it will be the end of many plastic table utensils. For example: meal trays, trays, boxes or salad bowls.
