Coimbra hospitals carry out a pioneering intervention in Portugal – Observer
The Hospital and University Center of Coimbra (CHUC) held for the first time a percutaneous intervention on the tricuspid valve, with the Pascal device, a pioneering treatment at the national level, was announced this Monday.
The intervention took place at the Hospital and University Center of Coimbra (CHUC), at the Cardiovascular Intervention Unit (UNIC).
“The treatment consisted of a minimally invasive, non-surgical intervention for the correction of severe and symptomatic tricuspid regurgitation and included the placement of two components in the tricuspid valve leaflets, allowing a significant reduction in valvular regurgitation, which allows for the improvement of complaints of the patient’s heart failure”, explains, quoted in the press release, the director of the CHUC cardiology service, Lino Gonçalves.
“There were no complications or complications and the patient was discharged the next day,” he added.
According to the director of the cardiology service, the regurgitation of this heart valve “causes the reflux of blood from the right ventricle to the right atrium with disastrous consequences for the patient”.
In these cases, the tricuspid insufficiency correction options “were limited to cardiac surgery”.
However, this less invasive intervention “will enable the treatment of more patients with this pathology, especially those who are older, frail and with high surgical risk and who often did not have access to any valve treatment to help their clinical stabilization”, age.
The cardiology team of the CHUC Cardiovascular Intervention Unit (UNIC) was met by doctors Marco Costa (UNIC Coordinator), Luís Paiva and Ana Botelho, with the support of a team of doctors and technicians from the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Spain.
