Prague – Despite the continuing coronavirus pandemic, RunCzech wants to return to Prague large city races, which last took place in the traditional format with thousands of recreational runners in 2019. Next year, the half marathon on April 2, the marathon on May 8 and the Grand Prix should take place. September 3. The organizers announced this in a press release today.
There have been several dates in the past two years, but neither in the spring nor in the possible alternative dates in the autumn did the races in Prague take place. RunCzech organized only regional half marathons from the usual road races, where significantly fewer people race. Despite the current record growth in the Czech Republic, the organizers believe that the coronavirus will not stop their activities in Prague next year.
“We are not afraid of covid complications. We are showing that we can coexist with the disease as a society without lockdowns and restrictions on sports, of course in compliance with basic anti-epidemic measures,” said Carlo Capalbo, president of the RunCzech organizing committee.
39,000 runners are expected to assemble three Prague races at distances from ten kilometers after the marathon. Thousands have already purchased entry fees from the past, because they could transfer it after repeated cancellations. The organizers are contacted to confirm their interest. “There is traditionally a huge interest in starting in the Prague races, both from the Czech Republic and abroad. Therefore, we need to find out as soon as possible whether any of the already registered have changed their minds.
While the marathon did not take place in Prague even in the autumn, elsewhere large city races took place. It was run, for example, in Vienna, London, Boston or New York.
