LIVE The Christmas tree on the Old Town Square came from Liberec
The most famous Christmas tree in the Czech Republic – this makes every year the Norway spruce, which adorns the Old Town Square in Prague. This year it is a 21.5 meter high conifer, which still stood on a plot near Jablonec nad Nisou, ie more than 100 kilometers from Prague. According to a spokesman for Taiko, which organizes markets every year, Hana Tietze decided to use it for security reasons.
“They chose from 35 trees, this one won due to its shape and rich branching, but I was reluctant for a long time before we gave our thumbs up to undergo such a demanding operation in terms of logistics. But the people of Prague definitely deserve the most beautiful tree. From the beginning, he was the main favorite, the other trees were near Česká Lípa and Šumava, but this one, despite its difficult location, simply won, “Tomáš Jílek, Chairman of the Board of Technology of the Capital City of Prague, told reporters.
You can watch how the tree is doing now in a live broadcast prepared by Mall.tv.
The tree was felled around ten o’clock in the morning by the champion of the Czech Republic in tree felling Jiří Vorlíček, it was already his tenth Christmas tree for Prague. The spruce was secured by a crane all the time, because it was first necessary to remove the lower part of the branches and prepare them according to the template so that it could be settled on the Old Town Square without further modification. The lumberjack also marked the side that will be visible from the astronomical clock on the spruce before placing the tree on the tractor. “When they build it from Monday to Tuesday, they will have it simplified, because it always works well for artificial lighting,” Vorlíček added.
Around 15:30, the excessive load set off in the direction of Prague, the power engineers had to help because it was necessary to lift the power line when leaving. The tractor with a six-tonne load set off in the direction of Jablonec nad Nisou and further to the reconstructed Rádelský mlýn crossroads, which will open for normal operation in three weeks. According to the spokesman of the Technology of the Capital City of Prague, Martin Drozd spends the night in Hostivař. He will go to the center of Prague on Monday around 22:00. Spruce should be planted in the Old Town Square on Tuesday, two hours after midnight, and will be ceremoniously lit on Saturday, November 27.
Furniture for the elderly
According to him, the fate of the tree will not end with Christmas. “It will be dismantled for the Three Kings, followed by the trimming of the branches that will go to the Prague Zoo. The tribe will go to a secondary vocational school, where students will use it to make furniture for people in Prague homes for the elderly and homes for children and young people, “said Jan Chabr (TOP 09), a Prague councilor for property.
